GROOMING TIPS FOR MALTESE PUPPIES
When starting your pup on grooming you should make it a "no play" time. Find a spot on a table or shelf. Secure a leash and put it on the dog, so if it jumps it will not hit the floor and hurt itself. You need both hands free. Do not put the pup on your lap to groom. He will want to play and chew on the brush, and your hands. It is best to never let this habit form. Let your dog know that grooming time is not play time, it is time to be still and you will get a reward at the end. Put a piece of treat to the side, handy as soon as you are finished. Brush your dog, clean its ears with soft cloth. Pluck any ear hairs from the canal. Clip the hair from and around the pups rear. Take this time to trim toenails (a person fingernail clipper works great). Do not over praise your pup. Give him a calm "Good Dog" and proceed with your work. When finished, remove the lead and let the dog stand for a few seconds on the table..then pick him up, praise lavishly and give him his treat. If you will continue this on a regular basis, the pup will come to look forward to grooming time, along with you.
